Music/tech writer Paul Lamere is putting streaming music data to use in interesting ways.

According to this state-by-state breakdown, you're in Edward Sharpe country

from musicmachinery.com

Music/tech writer Paul Lamere is using "an aggregation of data across a wide range of music services powered by The Echo Nest" in interesting ways on his Music Machinery web site:

For this study, I sampled the listening preferences of about a quarter million listeners that have a zip code associated with their account. I aggregated these listeners into regions (state, regional and all-US). To compare regions I look at the top-N most popular artists in each region and look for artists that have a substantial change in rank between the two regions. These artists are the artists that define the taste for the region.

Observations:

  • Springsteen took Jersey, to nobody's surprise.
  • Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros won PA? I'm okay with that.
  • Kurt Vile conquered Oregon.
  • Florida and Arizona... c'mon.
  • Several states, most notably West Virginia, have no idea what century this is.
  • Rhode Island stop streaming Nirvana and buy the album already.
  • Vermont and New Hampshire are fixing to start an old-school/new-school jam band pothead civil war.
  • Hawaii and Alaska, I don't what is going on. Some music just doesn't cross Canada/the Pacific I guess.
  • Idaho, you surprise me and I think we should be friends.

There's lots more data at Music Machinery.
