An event supporting arts and music education amidst crisis
Students will put on a chamber music concert, an art show and two drag performances to draw attention to the endangered status of arts in the public schools.

It's a tough time for arts and music education in Philadelphia public schools. The long-underfunded School District has faced deep budget cuts, and the prioritization of the math and reading skills measured by high-stakes standardized tests has narrowed the curriculum.
This Thursday evening's Stand Up for the Arts! event will showcase the importance of arts and music education. There will be an exhibition of youth visual art, Play On Philly students will perform chamber music and a jazz rendition of "Let it Be," an ArtWell student will perform spoken-word poetry, the Attic Youth Center will put on two drag performances and the University Community Collaborative will screen two films.
The event is at the Temple University Center City campus (1515 Market Street, Room 222) and begins at 6pm.
Child development experts Dr. Steven John Holochwost and Gretchen Walker will also speak to "the role of the arts in academic, social and emotional development."
The event is free and sponsored by Play On Philly, The Attic Youth Center, The ArtWell and The University Community Collaborative.
