Attempt at Guinness record for biggest bar crawl happening here in a month and a half
Start making your plans to be out of town now!

God dammit. St. Patrick's Month may have just ended, but Philadelphia will have only about a month's respite from plagues of amateur drinkers. On May 3, someone is trying for the Guinness record for world's largest bar crawl here in Philadelphia. Observe what they anticipate the best-case-scenario of this will look like:
So, what does this entail?
For your participation to be included in the final count, you must visit 10 different locations within the 8 hour period. According to Guinness rules, each participant needs to consume 5oz of a "beverage" at each location.
The record they're trying to beat is this one from last year:
The largest pub crawl involved 4,885 participants who visited 10 pubs in Kansas City's Power and Light District, Missouri, USA, during an event organised by the Crawl for Cancer LLC, on 1 June 2013. Twenty one bars in Kansas City's Power and Light district took part in the bar crawl. Bar crawlers' costumes ranged from army fatigues, rainbow colors, tutus, grass skirts, cows, cats, dogs, native Americans, baseball players, devils, Ninja Turtles, Smurfs, Umpaloomas and every color of t-shirt imaginable.
So either 10 or 21 bars took part in the Kansas City official-record-holding crawl. Hilariously, there is quite a bit of bickering on a subcategory of the "pub crawl" Wikipedia page about the true World's Largest Pub Crawl:
In Charlotte, North Carolina there is a yearly pub crawl on Saint Patrick's Day. In 2012 the pub crawl had more than 15,000 participants roughly 6000 more than the previous year which had 8987. Making this pub crawl the largest in the world.
The World's Greatest Pub Fest, held annually in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia, holds the Guinness World Record for the largest pub crawl. The World's Greatest Pub Crawl, as it was then known, set the official record of 4,718 participants, on June 14, 2009.
The Adelaide University Engineering Society (AUES) holds an annual pub crawl attracting students from all over South Australia to as many as 34 local pubs and clubs. The AUES's 2013 pub crawl is currently being assessed by Guinness as the largest pub crawl by participants or by participants wearing identical themed shirts. In March 2012, they sold 4000 "2012 The Alcopocalypse" T-shirts. For their event on the 23rd of March 2012. On the 22nd of March 2013, their "Boozing Bad" pub crawl sold 5127 shirts.
On October 9, 2010 London tried attempting to break Maryborough's Guinness World Record with an event called World Record Pub Crawl 2010. Organizers were expecting 5,000+ people. Due to problems with local authorities, the event was cancelled.
Wait, what's that? Oh, London said no:
Despite our best efforts, we have been told in no uncertain terms by the Metropolitan Police and respective local councils that we will not be allowed to run World Record Pub Crawl 2010 anywhere in London. We have tried our best to relocate and reorgansie but we have been met by nothing other than resistance and so regretably we have now been forced to cancel the whole event.
And that one in London was comparatively small-scale:
Our aim is to organise 3,500 people, split into 35 groups of 100 (friends will be kept together), to start in synchronicity at 11:00 in 35 different pubs around central London. Every 45 minutes they will rotate in an orderly manner to the next pub until, after 8 hours, ten pubs have been visited. This will satisfy the requirements of the Guinness World Records.
The link between all the bickering claimants to the title of World's Largest Bar Crawl is that there was, like, a plan. Philly's organizers seem to have something a bit more freeform and wide-ranging in mind. They cite 100+ locations and 15,000+ people, and say that they aren't allowed by Guinness rules to provide transportation between any of them. It kind of sounds like more of a "Pay $10-$25 To Then Pay Some More To Get Day Drunk Anywhere In Philadelphia While Wearing a Branded Keepsake Wristband Day" than an attempt at a world record or even an actual pub crawl.
According to the map of participating bars, you can go to pretty much any bar in:
Bella Vista, Center City East, Center City West, East Passyunk, Fairmount, Fishtown, Graduate Hospital, Midtown Village, Northern Liberties, Old City, Queen Village, Rittenhouse, South Philly, South Street, The Piazza, University City
and have it be participating, not just the usual Erin Express or Santa Crawl suspects.
Anyway, let's close with some quotes from the website that renew our desire to get the hell out of dodge that weekend, on the general theme of the website that participating in this will somehow be more meaningful than just being annoyingly drunk on a regular day:
So you're challenging me to make history by drinking at all my favorite bars on a spring day? Challenge accepted.

Am I Excited to try and break a world record? I think I am more excited than the first time I saw snow!

Everyone in Philly is so competitive, especially the colleges. It's so exciting to have an event where we can all come together and be on one team. We're going to destroy this record.
