Concert Review/Photos: Lera Lynn @ Tin Angel
Lightning struck a nearby building and she covered Neutral Milk Hotel.
[ 9/6 ] Ever since my first live experience with the musical force that is Lera Lynn back in 2011 at Athfest in Athens, GA, there have been many pulls to her talent. During her outdoor set of alt country on that day lightning struck a nearby building and she covered Neutral Milk Hotel. Her rich voice and guitar artistry tug at the ears in multifaceted ways and her presence has certainly retained the electricity that was personified by that June storm. Lynn has gotten better with every subsequent performance and last Saturday at the Tin Angel she certainly wowed the Philly crowd.
Playing behind her masterful 2014 record The Avenues she and guitarist Rick Lollar and bassist Robby Handley (playing together as a trio live for the first time that night) were on fire. From the album’s opening track “Out to Sea” and its catchy refrain of “I wish I may I wish I might” to the emotional core of “Letters,” Lynn proclaimed her musical brilliance. And her covers of Bruce Springsteen’s “Fire” and TV on the Radio’s “Wolf Like Me” fit perfectly into the night’s proceedings. Do not hesitate discovering her and make sure to see her live at any cost.
Washington, D.C. band Luray opened.
