On December 1, downtown girl Joan Verratti, the first licensed female distiller in the country since Prohibition, begins brewing batches of her Pollyodd Limoncello in Point Breeze. Pollyodd is an Italian colloquialism, for tying one on, explains Verrattis life and business partner, Tom Cavaliere. I remember my dad would come home and say, Jesus Christ, what a pollyodd I put on last night. Awesome. The all-natural, preservative-freejust lemons, water, sugar and grain alcohol in the limoncello, for exampledigestivi theyre distilling on 25th Street could certainly help you get your pollyodd on. Verratti and Cavaliere have perfected their recipes over the last five years and total 18 flavors of clear and creamy libations in their line. Verratti treated us to an undercover tasting earlier today, tipping shiny ribbons of water-based lemon, lime, orange and chocolate cellos from old Crown Royal bottles. Silk-smooth, bright and sweet (but not too sweet), theyre the real deal. Expect to see them in PLCB stores sometime in 2011, with part of the proceeds benefiting a scholarship fund for urban students in memory of Verrattis son, Thomas Joseph.
