Think of March as your chance to get really cultured this year, without sacrificing big bucks.

PECO (hey, they usually take your money, so this is a nice change) is sponsoring free arts attractions on Sundays in March, beginning March 2. The events include:

March 2: "Free First Sundays" at the Barnes Foundation, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This includes admission into the Barnes galleries, and special events like a discussion of Kevin Powers' The Yellow Birds at 1:15 as part of the "One Book, One Philadelphia" program. At 2 p.m. that day, the String Theory Performance Arts School will perform. At 3:45, The Renegade Company, a local theater group, will reinterpret The Yellow Birds book.

March 9: From noon to 4 p.m. at Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, visitors can enjoy stories from Carla Wiley as part of Art Sanctuary's Storytelling Circle, and also create souvenir mosaic medallions. Families can also tour the Magic Gardens for free from 1 to 3 p.m.

On Sundays through April 6, along with Beyond the Paint: Philadelphia's Mural Arts, admission to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) Museum, 118 N. Broad St., is free.

Also on March 9: At the PAFA Museum, from noon to 3 p.m., visitors can meet artists Eric Okdeh and make an art project. At 2 p.m., PAFA will screen "Concrete, Steel & Paint," a film about mural-making.

March 16: From noon to 3 p.m., artist Josh MacPhee will join visitors at the PAFA Museum to screen print broad sides by hand. At 2 p.m., PhillyRising will discuss neighborhood problems in Philadelphia and how we might solve them.

March 30: At 2 p.m. at PAFA, meet Philadelphia mural artists at 2 p.m. They'll present before-and-afters and demonstrate their process.
