INFO QUEST: What happens to misspelled Eagles hats?

A "Philadephia" Eagles hat for sale on nflshop.com got noticed, then taken down. BUT WE WANT ONE!

INFO QUEST: What happens to misspelled Eagles hats?

nflshop.com

In Info Quest, one of our staff writers details the lengths they go in pursuit of a piece of information. (It is not always hugely important information.)

As a former copy editor, I maintain City Paper's small Archive of Shame as an educational service for our interns. This essentially just means that I save a copy of anything that comes across my desk with front-and-center typos, terrible editorial judgment, shoddy fact-checking, etc. on a small bookshelf — a paperback with the title misspelled on the spine, a Philadelphia Weekly cover from several years back about the "Disco Bisuits," "Being White in Philly"... you get the idea.

So when Reddit noticed a "Philadephia" Eagles hat for sale on nflshop.com, I really, really wanted to get my hands on one for the Archive. Unfortunately, it appears that nflshop.com also noticed, and the model with the misspelling was listed as out of stock by the time I found it.  But what did they do with all the extra hats? And could I still somehow get my hands on one? (Feel free to skip the numbered bits and go straight to the answer.)

  1. First, a bit of googling revealed that the merchandising for nflshop.com isn't run by the NFL; it appears to be handled by a Conshohocken-based company, Fanatics, Inc. They don't have a media phone number listed, just an email, so I drop them an email explaining what I'm looking for and try other avenues while I'm waiting.
  2. Calling the number for nflshop.com customer service just puts me on the line with a bemused but helpful man who identifies himself as Raphael with a slight subcontinental accent. He doesn't know what happens to misspelled hats, and he says his manager's line is busy and he doesn't think he'll know, either, but he'll try to find something for me. After a minute on hold, Raphael comes back with the PR email address for Fanatics, Inc., that I've already tried. Thanks, Raphael!
  3. Now having confirmed that Fanatics, Inc. is indeed who I'm looking for, I try to look up their Conshohocken office phone number. This takes a surprisingly long time, but I finally find it listed under Kynetic, which is a holding company for Fanatics, ShopRunner and Rue La La. (Hey, I know Rue La La!)
  4. The woman who answers the phone at Kynetic has no idea what I'm talking about, but takes my name and contact information. She also gives me the number of their HR person.
  5. Hoping that she meant "PR," I try that number. Nobody there. Left a message.
