New Cut Copy video stars litte NextFab-made guys
And you can win your own stop-motion-loop set!
The video for Cut Copy's new "We Are Explorers" was made with stop-motion animation; instead of doing it in the more familiar Wallace and Gromit or Nightmare Before Christmas style, with a couple puppets that change in miniscule ways, this video was done by switching out the figures themselves for each new frame.
The couple hundred lo-res-looking figures in various stages of motion came off the 3D printer at Philly's NextFab; Vice's The Creators Project has a neat making-of piece:
Each frame of stop-motion included a different figurine, prompting NextFab to print roughly 200 characters to make filming possible. The figurines were used in groups of eight for each type of movement, so each running sequence, for example, was designed as a loop so the eighth figurine transitions into the movement of the first.
The video's directors like the idea of other people using their little glowy man and woman to make more stop-motion animation, so they're both making the schematics available on bittorrent and running a giveaway of set of motion-loop sets of characters with NextFab — entry's here.
Here's a video from NextFab of the figures rolling off the printer:
