Read any good books lately?

City Paper's new book blogger talks current lit events.

This week, in books:

Nomi Eve (pictured at right) is doing a reading tonight, Sept. 9, in Elkins Park at Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel from her new novel Henna House. Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 10, women's rights activist Lilly Ledbetter will be at a luncheon and book-signing at Le Méridien Philadelphia for her memoir, Grace and Grit. On Wednesday evening, at the Philadelphia City Institute Library, you can hear author Dianne Hales discuss her new book, Mona Lisa: A Life Discovered. Of course, if you do that, you'll miss NPR and Washington Post book reviewer Maureen Corrigan's appearance at the Free Library of Philadelphia.

My point? We are a lit-lovin' book-readin' type of town. We welcome authors, and we support them. We read their books and we go to events where they read their books to us. And a bunch of these authors even live here, which means we probably sit next to them on the bus, or in a restaurant, or edge past them a little too closely when we're driving and they're rushing through the crosswalk just after the light changes.

I've been a part of the book culture of this town for a while now, ever since I moved back here from New York in 2002. I've spent a lot of time since then reading a lot of books, attending a lot of literary events and meeting and talking to a lot of authors. And it never ends — thank goodness!

Now I'm going to share what I know with you in this new blog. You'll find me a here a few times a week with news and commentary about new books, publishing happenings, and literary events, local and otherwise. Together we'll "Get Lit," as the name of the blog says, and enjoy and celebrate the best of what books can give us: entertainment and information; a virtual trip to a far-off place or to somewhere deep inside our souls.

I'm going to be sharing this space with other book bloggers, too. Let us know what you're reading because maybe we'll write about that, too. So if you have an answer to the question, "Read any good books lately?" email me at lynn@lynnrosen.com and tell me about it. Please also share news of literary happenings or events.

Let the conversation begin!
