Activists say that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will join Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett this Monday at the Union League in Center City Philadelphia.
The Republican Governors Association, a group led by Christie that raises money for Republican candidates, seems to be organizing the event to support Corbett's beleaguered reelection campaign. Christie's office referred City Paper to Republican Governors Association spokesperson Jon Thompson. He declined to provide any details on a Philadelphia event.
"I can confirm there will be a Christie/Corbett fundraiser on Monday in Philly," Thompson wrote by e-mail. "I can't release details on where and confirm who is sponsoring just yet but I should be able to within the next couple hours."
Thompson said an RGA fundraiser with Christie and Corbett on Friday at 2 p.m. in Pittsburgh "will be closed [to] press."
The Philadelphia Coalition Advocating for Public Schools (PCAPS) will be at The Union League Monday at 4 p.m. to protest.
"These Governors both stand for policies that enrich corporations at the expense of working people, for cutting back on public education and health care, for privatizing schools and public services, for disempowering and impoverishing communities of color," according to a statement on PCAPS' website.
Gov. Corbett is deeply unpopular in Philadelphia thanks to his deep cuts to public education, and he is typically greeted by large protests whenever he visits the city. In January, Corbett canceled a visit to Central High School at the last minute in the face of student and teacher protest. It would have been his first documented visit to a Philadelphia public school.
