In memoriam: Doctor, philanthropist Dr. Walter P. Lomax
In the ’80s, Dr. Walter P. Lomax famously turned his small South Philly clinic into an impressive network of medical centers that provided care to the poor and the incarcerated. But his mission led him to help the spiritually needy as well: The Lomax Family Foundation funded nonprofit organizations in the arts, education, health and cultural enrichment for Philly’s African-American community. The Lomax Companies, which he chaired, trafficked in everything from real-estate investment and technology to 900AM-WURD, Pennsylvania’s only black-owned-and-operated radio station. When Lomazx died on Oct. 10 at age 81, Mayor Nutter praised his philanthropy and multifaceted dedication to his community thusly: “Dr. Lomax set a very high example for us all to follow, and I will miss him deeply.”
