Concert Review: Mazzy Star @ Union Transfer 11/23
Friday night at Union Transfer was like a dream.

Friday night at Union Transfer was like a dream. There was the near total darkness of the stage, lit with only deep purple lights, candles and video projections, and the venue as a whole, with a strict no-camera-and-cellphone policy in effect. And there was the fact that a band that many in the room thought they’d never get to see was performing. In the most lucid moments, Mazzy Star and their distinctively haunting rock were dazzling. Trancelike from the opening notes of “Look on Down From the Bridge” to the back-to-back airings of their masterworks, “Halah” and “Fade Into You,” later in the main set, Mazzy Star were as elusive as they have been on their recordings. Singer Hope Sandoval tempted the ears with her siren call as multi-instrumentalist and songwriter David Roback led the atmospheric barrage of guitars. A two-song encore led by the standout “California” from this year’s Seasons of Your Day, the band’s first release in 17 years, gave a ephemeral finish to the experience. And then everyone in the sold-out crowd awoke, a collective lucid dream over.
