You might not have noticed, but Lancaster, Pa. — renowned for auctions, outlet malls and spaetzle — has become a home base for bugged out, riff-heavy indie rawk and cranked-up metal. Gladiators are the overlords of that hard-as-nails, even progressive (for Lancaster), sound. Their debut album, One Tooth at a Time, was produced by Rick Armellino of doomy metal act This or the Apocalypse, but it’s less discordant and dismal than most of the bands from that scene. Lead Gladiator Mike Hart channels all his grit and grime into a working-class blues that Pennsylvanians can relate to.
