Icepack: Sign My Yearbook

As we round the bend to year's end, I'm mentioning a few of — and you can sing this like you're watching Sound of Music with Carrie Underwood and the vamp guy from True Blood — my favorite things from 2013, just some stuff that's on my mind.

As we round the bend to year’s end, I’m mentioning a few of — and you can sing this like you’re watching Sound of Music with Carrie Underwood and the vamp guy from True Blood — my favorite things from 2013, just some stuff that’s on my mind:

  • You know that the cheesy Mort Krim-as-inspiration-for-Anchorman was a concept widely reported during the first film, right? Did we need a rehash for A2? Will Krim features comes around during A3, still as unfunny as the film is?
  • I believe that Philly food sites are too interdependent upon each other, but, If you’re going to do it, do it direct and make it simpler: Local food blogs that subscribe to the venerable food reporter, should just have a daily section entitled “Michael Klein Says” since so much of what he writes becomes the basis for a day’s news.
  • With each passing album — with 2013’s On Oni Pond as its most recent living proof — Philadelphia’s wilding crew Man Man sound saner and soberer. How much more normal can they get to sounding without turning into OneRepublic?
  • Yeah, Vince Fumo should run. And win.
  • Joe Sixpack is gone as executive director of Philly Beer Week. Jennie Hatton moved from Profile PR and her all-encompassing perch as PBW’s prime proponent to a focused gig with Crabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer. What will happen to the event that put local craft brew on the map and who should curate it?
  • The process of a second casino license in Philly is truly dragging its heels, especially when you consider that the guy and spot who should get it — Bart Blatstein’s dream of a new Inquirer building on N. Broad — is all-of-a-sudden catching an earful from nearby schools and churches. They weren’t bitching when the now-out-of-the-running Steve Wynn looked like the top contender. With all the worries as to who and where Philly’s next casino should go, it’s nice hearing some Atlantic City gaming news with the Hard Rock pulling ahead of the pack (see last week’s Icepack Illustrated) in looking into buying out beleaguered Revel, and the Atlantic Club taken over by Caesars and the Trop. By the way, kudos to Bart for buying my favorite Rittenhouse Square home, and perhaps turning my corner’s empty lot at Broad and Washington into something. Anything.
  • I am not about to damn anyone and yell “guilty” until all presumptions of innocence have been tested and tried. Seriously though, was any one surprised that Matt Swartz wound up at the hands of the state police with a mug shot channeling both Zach Galifianakis and Nick Nolte? If you know anyone who’s worked in Philly’s restaubar biz, rumors had him dicking around employees/rules since his days in East Falls. Plus, he gets bonus jerkoff points for putting the liquor license under his wife’s name.
