City Paper is sold to Metro
The speculation that surfaced publicly last week about the sale of Philly City Paper was confirmed today. Metro US executives this morning told the staff of City Paper that the weekly publication was becoming a part of Metro.
The sale price was not disclosed, and the CP layoffs that were announced cut across each department.
Metro executives have promised that City Paper will continue to publish as an independent voice that is committed to investigative journalism and long-form narratives as well as providing an insider's knowledge of the city's music, arts and restaurant scene.
Staffers who were not being kept were told early this morning, and those who still had jobs were later handed letters detailing their employment terms with Metro.
The alternative paper, which was owned by the Rock family, was founded in 1981.
City Paper moved into offices on the same floor as Metro, in the Graham Building across from City Hall, last September. Though the two papers shared a kitchen, a stack of filing cabinets formed a wall that separated the two papers. Sometime this afternoon, the filing cabinets were moved, allowing passage between the two offices.
