Activists confront mayor after recent horse collapse

An estimated two hundred activists staged a protest in response to a recent carriage horse driver who is accused of overworking his horse until it collapsed.

The protest was held in front of Gracie Mansion, the home of Mayor Bill de Blasio, to demand that he fulfill his 2013 campaign pledge to "end carriage rides" in NYC.

In 2013, while running for mayor, de Blasio said "I would ban the horse carriages in Central Park within the first week on the job".

In February 2016 the Mayor's attempt to limit the amount of horse-carriage in Manhattan ended when the New York City Council canceled a vote on his bill to confine the industry's horses to Central Park.

Activists say that horse-drawn carriages cannot be operated humanely or safely in NYC.
