Hip-Hop Happenings
This Friday, the University of Pennsylvania hosts "Islam and The Globalization of Hip Hop." The all-day symposium and concert is jam-packed with scholars, movers, shakers and artists.
The first panel, "Islam In The Mix," features panelists William E. Perkins (editor of Droppin’ Science: Critical Essays on Hip Hop Culture ), Ewuare Osayande (Chair of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Black Radical Congress) and James P. Spady (author of several tomes on hip-hop culture). The panel runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Panel two, "The Globalization of Hip Hop," will include James B. Peterson, a Doctoral Candidate at Penn focusing his dissertation on the concept of "underground" in African-American culture, from the Underground Railroad to underground hip-hop. Ted Swedenburg (Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Arkansas and specialist on Islam and World Music) and Michelle Hartman (Assistant Professor of Comparative Literatures and Languages at Hofstra University) will also participate in the 1 -2:30 p.m. panel.
Lastly, a roundtable discussion moderated by David Lamb — adjunct Professor at John Jay College in New York and author of The Trumpet is Blown. Roundtabler’s include Wise Intelligent and Culture Freedom of Poor Righteous Teachers, Grand Agent, C-Rayz Walz of Stronghold, spoken word artist Suheir Hammad and Jamarah Leverette of the Spoken Word Collective. (After they’ve talked the talk, roundtable participants will perform a free concert at The Rotunda, 4012 Walnut St., 8 p.m.) The discussion will serve as a forum for open reflection on the day’s events and as an opportunity for attendees to exchange ideas pertaining to the themes of the convention or to Islam. 3-4:30 p.m. The symposium takes place this Friday, March 30, at Penn’s Irvine Auditorium, Amado Recital Room, 34th and Spruce Streets.
