Goin’ on a Treasure Hunt
Dissentia Curatorial Services has always worked toward bringing art to the public. But now it’s up to you to find the art. Starting Oct. 5, Dissentia presents the monthlong "Treasure Hunt," a program that puts art outside the traditional gallery setting in places like alleyways, bars, sidewalks and boutiques to be found by astute art sleuths.
The folks from Dissentia will be stationed at key Old City intersections during First Friday to hand out clue sheets (just look for the guys in the pirate hats). Or you can print your own from www.dissentia.com. Then it’s up to you to decipher the rhyming clues and locate the twenty pieces of art installed in various spots around Old City. It won’t be easy; there’s no map and the pieces aren’t going to jump out at you, but those who tough it out ’til the end can turn in their clue sheets to Dissentia for a mystery prize.
Dissentia’s past shows have included "Steal This Show" which made pieces available for theft by patrons, and "100 paintings for 100 bathrooms" which installed art in the bathrooms of 1999 Fringe Festival venues. Among the artists to look for this time around are Christopher Macan, who uses a Polaroid transfer technique to put his photos on non-traditional surfaces and Alyse Bernstein, who will make lithographs using the classic Greek motif from diner coffee cups. Other artists include Trishy Gdowik, Linda Harris, Mick Ricerto and Marc Manning.
Treasure Hunt starts First Friday, Oct. 5 and runs throughout the entire month in various locations in Old City. For more information or to print a clue sheet visit www.dissentia.com.
