Celtic Fling

Lads and lasses of the land, hear ye, hear ye: The annual Celtic Fling and Highland Games commences this weekend, and the clans are raring to go. The three-day festival, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, celebrates all things tartan, plaid and gloriously green. Seven stages and a jousting arena will bustle with entertainment, presenting such acts as Canada's Tartan Terrors comedy troupe and shepherding by a trained Border collie. Steal a kiss from the Duo of Woo -- two Scotsmen who wander the 35-acre premises wooing women -- or shell out shillings for a skein of Irish wool, a knotted pewter pendant or a vial of patchouli. Observe blacksmiths and woodcarvers hard at work, gorge on meat pies and shortbread or swing by the microbrewery lodged inside the Swashbuckler Pub for a mug of dark ale. Mosey over to the hammer throw -- an official Highland game that involves, you guessed it, throwing a hammer -- or witness musical showdowns where bagpipes and harps meet didgeridoos and electric guitars. Featured performances include Brenga Astur, the Rogues, Brother and the Glengarry Bhoys. Visit Sunday and you'll spot Philadelphia's Legacy Irish Step Dancers kicking up their heels with mind-numbing speed. And if you've got the true luck o' the Irish or raw Scot spirit in your veins, you may even catch a glimpse under those wee lil' kilts.

Celtic Fling and Highland Games, Fri.-Sun., July 5-7, 11 a.m.-7:30 p.m., $7.95-$19.95, Mount Hope Estate and Winery, 717-665-7021, ext. 231, www.parenfaire.com.
