Sarah Zwerling says she had been thinking a lot about tumbling and acrobatics, and thought, "If only I could have my body do that." So the artist began to consider different materials and techniques in an ongoing (somewhat scientific) investigation into making that happen. Substituting handblown sugar sculptural figures for her own body, Zwerling made an animated video that will be projected onto starched-stiff silk hangings in the Arts League gallery. The 10-inch figures tumble and spin on the colorful fabric walls, which, thanks to the turntable-mounted projector, will themselves appear to rotate. As long as viewers don't spin themselves dizzy, the exhibit should offer insight into a world of environmental experiments with the human -- and saccharine -- form.
“Swoosh,” reception Fri., July 11, 5 p.m., exhibit through Aug. 23, University City Arts League, 4226 Spruce St., 215-382-7811.
