West Coast-based singer-songwriter Susie Suh — apparently the first Asian-American female singer-songwriter signed to a major label — brings her sensitive and tuneful brooding to town for several shows over the next few weeks.
With a sound that falls somewhere between Fiona Apple and Aimee Mann, the 25-year-old guitarist/pianist was discovered while in college by music industry titans Charles Koppelman and Don Rubin. They introduced her to another heavyweight, Glen Ballard, who produced her self-titled Epic Records debut, which hits stores later this month.
Suh's highly autobiographical and soul-in-conflict songs touch upon her battles with her Korean-born parents ("Your Battlefield"), her musical aspirations ("Shell") and love ("Light On My Shoulder"). Touring relentlessly on her own over the past few months to build buzz, Suh's burnished voice and delicate instrumentation are as much part of her appeal as is her affinity for intimate, take-a-walk-in-my-shoes songwriting.
