Brimming with wit and wonder, Carter reveled in the intimacy of the room.

[ 10/19 ] I’d never seen Carlene Carter perform live before, and I’d never seen anybody play the New Hope Winery, so I’m sort of surprised to report that this was one of my favorite shows of the year. Brimming with wit and wonder, Carter reveled in the intimacy of the room.

While showcasing songs from her 2014 record Carter Girl, Carter embraced her deep past and spun yarns from her childhood to present. Mostly playing her Gibson guitar and supported by her husband Joe Breen on backing vocals on several songs, she summoned the Carter scratch that her grandmother (Mother Maybelle) birthed nearly 80 years ago. And to watch her and Breen showcase their affections was another highlight (he kissed her hand at one point and their exchanged glances were beautiful to behold). Carter plucked an autoharp made for her and strummed a keyboard as well. Honest and entertaining, and a brilliant musician, she filled the venue with musical warmth that will not soon be forgotten.
