This past Monday Swedish folk rocker Jose Gonzalez treated Philly to the first stop on his U.S. tour. With his first album in seven years to play behind — Vestiges & Claws — Gonzalez stirred a sold out Union Transfer.
This past Monday Swedish folk rocker Jose Gonzalez treated Philly to the first stop on his U.S. tour. With his first album in seven years to play behind — Vestiges & Claws — Gonzalez stirred a sold out Union Transfer.
Standing halfway back on the stage with spotlights to his back, Gonzalez employed his mantra-like guitar strumming to magical effect. Whether playing his stripped-down cover of Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” or the lead track from Vestiges (“With the Ink of a Ghost”), the textures of his hollow sweet whisper haunted the ears. A blaze of soulful ruminations held the crowd stock still throughout, with rapturous applause always a certainty. Audience entrancement will certainly follow him wherever he goes.
Icelandic native Olof Arnalds opened the show with her quasi-classical folk.
