Concert Review/Photos: Rhett Miller @ World Café Live at The Queen
A Thursday night spent in the presence of a solo acoustic Rhett Miller is a glorious evening, as was proven last week at World Café Live at The Queen in Wilmington. A make-up date for a snowed out March show, Miller ripped through twenty-plus songs. With a new solo album, The Traveler, in the mix, Miller plumbed the depths of past and present. “Most in the Summertime” and “Kiss Me On the Fire Escape” from the new record sounded like classic Miller and he even played one of the new tracks for the first time live — “Jules.”
Miller reminisced about David Letterman and played a song the Old 97’s did live on air when Letterman was out due to a heart attack (“Jagged”). Also open to requests, Miller happily played “Busted Afternoon.” Like a jukebox full of great songs, he excited a seated crowd with his trademark hair-swishing and whirlwind guitar playing. A memorable night was had by all.
Delaware native Kalai King opened with some acoustic alt-country as well as a Warren Zevon cover.
