With Fairport Convention and his work with ex-wife Linda as part of his repertoire, Thompson rattled off his stark, emotionally direct songs to a riveted audience.

[ 10/16 ] To witness the sounds Richard Thompson can create with an acoustic guitar — one he barely tuned during a 20-song set — is a thing of wonder. Touring behind his Acoustic Classics, he wowed the Scottish Rite in Collingswood last week.

With Fairport Convention and his work with ex-wife Linda as part of his repertoire, Thompson rattled off his stark, emotionally direct songs to a riveted audience. “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” and “Read About Love” are an integral part of contemporary folk rock DNA and a great pleasure to hear live. His suite of work about wartime correspondence during World War I to be part of 14-18 NOW was quite stirring. He capped off the evening with a stunning second encore: “Wall of Death” and “Dimming of the Day.”

Dar Williams opened the show with a beautiful set that had a rare moment for an opener: an encore (where she played the stirring “The Babysitter’s Here”).
