Concert Review/Photos: Robert Plant/The Pixies @ The Mann Center 6/17
It is not every day the opener of a show plays more songs than the headliner.
It is not every day the opener of a show plays more songs than the headliner. It is not every day that one gets to hear one of the most iconic voices in rock outdoors on a late spring night.
A distant dream to the classic rock template of Led Zeppelin, The Pixies crammed 18 songs into an hour — and uttered not one single word to the audience. Punked-out rock staples like “Monkey Gone to Heaven” and “Where is My Mind?” had some dancing while others not familiar absorbed with a passing curiosity.
Plant emerged with his long locks and a voice rich and ready to rock out. With his Sensational Space Shifters backing band at his disposal, a baker’s dozen worth of songs (more if one counts the medleys) were delivered to an eager crowd. Led Zeppelin appeared with Plant’s reinterpretations throughout, from the opening “The Wanton Song” to the encore of “Rock and Roll.” His own solo material and blues covers popped into the night’s jukebox as well. Plant did make sure to mention Philadelphia and South Street at varying times to keep the amphitheater show as intimate as possible. Not needing to prove anything, Plant did show he still has many musical gifts to share.
