Eat This Immediately: Manti at Shish Kabob Palace
Yet another reason to eat in the Northeast.
Strip malls dining in the Northeast is a favorite weekend pastime about these parts and this past weekend we headed up to Shish Kebab Palace (1683 Grant Ave.) to check out their menu that combines Uzbek and Russian fare with Sephardic Jewish cuisine. Kicking off with rounds of house-baked bread and square, cheese-filled pastries called khachpuri, we checked out the plov, a cuminy rice pilaf with carrots and chicken thighs and tried a few of the kebabs. Grilled and served on some serious metal skewers, the skirt steak kebab was a standout, with a beefiness that seemed almost dry aged. But being a sucker for dumplings of all shapes, sizes and places of origin, the manti (on the menu as Uzbek meat ravioli) were killer, tender, lacy little packages boiled and tossed with butter and dill and served with an ice cream dish of thick sour cream. Seriously, eat these immediately.
