That was XPoNential: Day 3
Courtney Barnett, Indigo Girls, George Ezra, Grace Potter, The Wailers and more.
Let’s close this thing out:
- Another standout first hour of Philly music. Pine Barons and their grungy rock crunched for the first half hour while Cheerleader and their sparse indie feel was summery and sweet.
- Buckwheat Zydeco brought his accordion and zydeco music with its Creole sass to the sundrenched crowd. Purely joyous musical moments ensued.
- The desert rock of Bombino electrified the air in the 3 o’clock hour. The entrancing artistry of Omara “Bombino” Moctar’s guitar picking was as mesmerizing as the full garb he (originally from Niger) and his band wore in the peak heat of the day.
- Following up one great guitarist with another was great festival planning, as Courtney Barnett took the River Stage to one of the most enthusiastic crowds of the weekend. As brilliant as ever, to witness her shredding in broad daylight was a treat that will not soon be forgotten.
- And to close out Wiggins Park with the greatness of the Indigo Girls was stunning indeed. Playing behind a 2015 release, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, along with a crack band, made the scorching sun all the more palatable with their incisive folk rock.
- The lineup at Susquehanna Bank Center was much more varied than on Saturday, with The Wailers bringing Bob Marley to life with authenticity, George Ezra getting “I love yous” from a crowd of younger girls that show folk can be sexy to some and Grace Potter used every bit of stage possible to strut her guitar-playing and vocal range to make a grand spectacle to end a great festival.
