The 2014 Barrymore Award winners in theater
Inis Nua cleans up.

Theater Philadelphia’s Barrymore Awards were back in action on Monday night with a full-blown awards ceremony, where 31 theater companies competed for more than 20 awards.
Notable winners include Inis Nua Theatre Company, which clearly made an impression this year. The company walked away five Barrymores, including the June and Steve Wolfson Award for an Evolving Theatre Company.
Likewise, InterAct Theater Company’s depiction of Geno’s Steaks “speak-English-when-ordering” controversy, Down Past Passyunk, earned the company Outstanding Overall Production of a Play, as well as Outstanding New Play.
The awards for individual actors were just as exciting. James Ijames, who is no stranger to the Barrymores, snagged his fourth award, this time for Outstanding Direction of a Play for his production of The Brothers Size. Newer actress to the scene Liz Filios won not only Outstanding Leading Actress in a Musical for her work in Inis Nua’s Midsummer [a play with songs], but also the prestigious F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist.
The revival of the Barrymore Awards and the variety of strong contenders and winners show that the Philadelphia theater scene is vibrant as ever. With the 2014-15 theater season well under way, we look forward to next year’s ceremony. In the meantime, here’s a full list of the 2014 Barrymore Award winners:
