Bomb Scare Shuts Down Major New York City Area

A person in a dark SUV threw a fake bomb into an NYPD van in Times Square shortly before midnight. At 1:10 the bomb squad gave an all clear that it was a fake device to look like a bomb.

J. Peter Donald, Assistant Commissioner for Communication & Public Information, tweeted "All clear by the bomb squad after a suspicious object was thrown at a police car." on his Twitter account @JPeterDonaldt.

Police spotted the same viehicle with a man inside parked in Columbus Circle. After hours-long standoff the 52-year-old man, identified as Hector Meneses, was taken into custody.
