Concert Review/Photos: Ex Hex @ Union Transfer 4/26
If Ex Hex were a television show, they'd be vintage Batman.
If Ex Hex were a television show, they’d be vintage Batman — with every guitar shred, bass note and drum wallop being followed by frames of pop art “pows” and “whams.” Last Sunday, at their largest headlining Philly gig yet (and their first all-age show in town), their 2014 gem Rips provided the fuel for their rock inferno.
Starting with “Don’t Wanna Lose” and including a new song that fits right into their oeuvre, the trio had the crowd floating with rock euphoria. Mary Timony whirled her mighty Les Paul and met up as often as possible with the stellar bass force of Betsy Wright, while Laura Harris unleashed a heavy dose of percussive ka-pows.
This was my fourth Ex Hex show, and I can declare they have not lost an ounce of energy or joy as their fanbase has grown.
The two openers certainly whet the crowd’s appetites for Ex Hex. Philly-based A.M. Mills delivered some sweet alt-country that got better and better as the set wore on. Philly’s own Sheer Mag followed, splitting open everyone’s ears with their punk explosiveness.
