Concert Review/Photos: Ryan Adams @ the Grand Opera House 5/12

Last Tuesday, the 1,200-seat intimacy of the Grand Opera House in Wilmington was shaken by the rock machine that is Ryan Adams. With a stage setting emulating a phantasmagoria of an ’80s teenager — arcade games, incense, a soda machine and gigantic speakers — Adams and company unleashed a 21-song strong set. Opening with the brilliant “Gimme Something Good” and powering through such numbers as “My Winding Wheel” and the expansive “Magnolia Mountain,” it was a stunning and memorable show. Adams would unfurl guitar solos on a whim, reaffirming his rock star status with every chord and body jerk. And to have Natalie Prass join him on “Oh My Sweet Carolina” was an extra, unexpected treat for sure.
Philly-based Strand of Oaks warmed up the crowd with 30 minutes of metallic folk.
