Concert Review/Photos: Those Darlins/Adia Victoria @ Kung Fu Necktie 5/6
Those Darlins were the driving force, but the opener stole the show.
When Jessi Zazu gets her bug-eyed rock-hunger look going during a Those Darlins show, you know the show has hit full intensity. Last Wednesday at Kung Fu Necktie this face popped up early in the set, as she stared down a packed room with trademark twang and grit. Zazu, guitarist Nikki Kvarnes, bassist Linwood Regensburg and drummer Duncan Shea soaked Philly with their country punk.
Opening with “Red Light Love,” Those Darlins walloped the ears and eyes with a raucous intensity. Zazu shredded away on stage and at the edge of the crowd. Sweat oozed from the lyrics, performers and audience as May turned into a summery rock party. Those Darlins were the perfect ambassadors for such a night, let alone any night of rock ’n’ roll.
And while Those Darlins were the driving force of the night, the opener Adia Victoria stole the show. With vocals sweet and brittle and a guitar samurai-sword sharp, Victoria was enthralling. With only an EP thus far (Sea of Sand) her and her solid band wove tales with whiffs of blues, country and folk emanating from the lyrics. A brilliant career certainly awaits her.
