Friday's highlights at WXPN's big music fest: Milton, Dawes, Madisen Ward and more.

Last weekend, the Camden waterfront hosted one of the area’s premiere festivals, WXPN’S XPoNential Music Festival. Friday’s lineup is always smaller than the rest of the weekend’s due to the later start time, but there was no shortage of highlights at Wiggins Park. They included:

  • Milton leaped off the Marina Stage into the crowd to get them to sing along to his catchy “Everybody Knows.” The R&B and hip-hop up-and-comer wowed with his energy and his large band.
  • Dusk may not have descended yet, but the folk of Madisen Ward & Mama Bear cut through the air with a dark, soothing hush.
  • Robert Randolph, John Medeski and the North Mississippi Allstars rocked the River Stage as The Word. Randolph’s pedal steel playing was mesmerizing, creating sounds akin to vocals for the opener “New World Order.”
  • A perfect night sky to frame the Philadelphia skyline was what Dawes rocked out to. Their guitar sound and the grandeur of the City of Brotherly Love brought a great end to day one.
